What is an RF Terminal?
Radio Frequency terminals (RF or Handheld), commonly known as Handhelds, are rugged portable computers specifically designed for the warehouse environment. These devices allow operators to communicate with the WMS in real time, sending and receiving data through an industrial Wi-Fi network. Equipped with barcode (or RFID) readers, they are the primary tool for eliminating paper usage in logistics.
Essential Characteristics for Operations
Ruggedness
Unlike a regular smartphone, an RF terminal is built to withstand drops on concrete, dust, and extreme temperatures (essential in cold/frozen storage warehouses).
Ergonomics
Available in various form factors such as pistol-grip, wrist-mounted (wearables), or handheld, ensuring operator comfort during 8-hour shifts.
Real-Time Connectivity
Ensures that as soon as a product is scanned, the stock in the system is instantly updated, preventing information errors.
Advantages of Using with a WMS
Error Elimination
The operator receives the task on screen and, when scanning the barcode, the system validates whether the item and location are correct.
Productivity
The WMS guides the operator along the shortest path, indicating the next task directly on the terminal, without needing to return to a central desk.
Team Management
Allows warehouse managers to monitor each worker's performance and order progress in real time.
