Comprehensive Definition
Voice Picking is an order preparation technology that uses voice commands and speech recognition to guide warehouse operators in their tasks. Through a headset with microphone connected to a portable terminal (usually worn on the belt), the system "speaks" to the operator, indicating the next location, item, and quantity to pick. The operator confirms task execution also through voice.
How the WMS Flow Works
Unlike traditional methods requiring paper or RF terminals with screens, Voice Picking enables a completely "hands-free, eyes-free" operation:
Instruction
The WMS sends the task and the voice system says: "Aisle 4, Location 12, pick 5 units".
Confirmation
The operator goes to the location and speaks a control code (check digits) to confirm they are at the right spot.
Validation
After picking the items, the operator says "Five". The system validates and gives the next instruction.
Critical Advantages for Logistics Operations
Productivity Increase
Since operators don't have to stop to read paper or look at a screen, work pace increases between 15% to 25%.
Drastic Error Reduction
The need to confirm location codes and quantities by voice ensures picking accuracy above 99%.
Safety and Ergonomics
Operators have their hands free to handle boxes or operate equipment (like pallet jacks), reducing accident risk and physical fatigue.
Accelerated Training
It's an extremely intuitive system. In Portugal, where seasonal staff turnover can be high, training time for new operators is reduced by more than half.
Ideal Applications for Voice Picking
Cold/Frozen Chambers
It's the perfect solution for negative temperature environments, where glove use makes handling touch terminals difficult and paper degrades with humidity.
Unit and Case Picking
Very effective in e-commerce and retail operations with high volume of lines per order.
