Comprehensive Definition
Interleaving is an advanced task management technique used by high-performance WMS software to maximize the productivity of material handling equipment (such as forklifts). It consists of "interleaving" different types of tasks, usually Put-away and Picking, so that the operator never travels through the warehouse with an empty vehicle.
Practical Efficiency Example
Without Interleaving, an operator stores a pallet on the rack and returns empty to the receiving dock. With Interleaving, the WMS analyzes pending tasks and, as soon as the operator confirms the put-away, the system immediately assigns a nearby picking task. The operator uses the "return trip" to bring merchandise to the shipping area.
Operational Benefits
Reduced Empty Travel
Can increase equipment productivity by up to 30%.
Less Equipment Wear
Fewer kilometers traveled means lower battery consumption and less forklift maintenance.
Flow Optimization
Helps maintain a constant balance between warehouse inbound and outbound flows.
