What is Job Slotting?
Job Slotting (often confused with product Slotting) is a management technique that analyzes and assigns the right tasks to the right operators, at the ideal time and location, based on their training, current location, and historical productivity. While Slotting organizes products, Job Slotting organizes the workforce within the warehouse.
Applications in a WMS Context
An advanced WMS uses Job Slotting to transform the warehouse into a high-performance environment:
Competency Management
The system doesn't assign a reach truck driving task to an operator who is only trained for manual pallet jacks.
Workload Balancing
If the system detects that the shipping area is congested, Job Slotting can suggest moving operators from the receiving area to reinforce order dispatch.
Standards Measurement (Labor Management)
Allows defining the standard time for each "Job" (task). The WMS compares actual time with expected time, identifying bottlenecks or training needs.
Advantages for Warehouse Managers
Fair Evaluation
Enables objective measurement of individual performance, which is essential for bonus models or productivity incentives.
Reduced Dead Time
Ensures no operator is left "idle" waiting for instructions, as the system always has the next "Job" ready on the RF terminal.
Safety and Compliance
Ensures workplace safety standards are met by assigning risk tasks only to properly certified personnel.
