Handling
Handling encompasses all physical operations involved in moving goods within a warehouse. This includes unloading, receiving, internal movement, order picking, and loading.
Handling Optimization with WMS
Logistics costs are directly tied to the number of times a product is "touched" or handled. The goal of an excellent WMS is "One-Touch Handling":
Touch Minimization
The fewer times goods are moved, the lower the risk of damage and the lower the labor costs.
Ergonomics
A good WMS plans handling so that operators exert less physical effort, suggesting appropriate equipment (forklifts, pallet jacks) based on load weight.
Handling Operations
Unloading & Receiving
Transfer of goods from transport to warehouse, with quantity and quality verification.
Internal Movement
Movement of products between warehouse zones, including put-away and replenishment of picking locations.
Picking & Loading
Order picking, packing, and consolidation for dispatch, minimizing damage during final handling.
