Comprehensive Definition
Just-in-Sequence (JIS) is an advanced evolution of the JIT model. Beyond goods arriving at the right time, they arrive in the exact order (sequence) in which they will be used on the assembly line or in the next process. It is a common model in complex assembly factories (such as Autoeuropa in Palmela, Portugal), where components must arrive organized by color, model, or technical specification.
How WMS Supports JIS
The complexity of JIS is impossible to manage manually. Warehouse software assumes a critical role as "orchestrator":
Mirror Preparation
The supplier's WMS organizes picking so that the first part to be removed from the pallet or container at the destination is the first part needed on the line.
Extreme Traceability
Each unit is monitored individually. If a part is swapped in the sequence, the system must issue an immediate alert, as this would cause an assembly error at the end customer.
Synchronization Logistics
The WMS manages "delivery windows" with minute-level precision, ensuring that the inbound flow matches the production rhythm (Takt Time).
Difference Between JIT and JIS
While JIT focuses on quantity and timing (having the product when needed), JIS focuses on quantity, timing, and order (having the right product, in the right queue position).
