Comprehensive Definition
EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) is the structured transfer of data between organizations by electronic means. In logistics, it replaces the manual exchange of paper documents or informal emails (such as invoices, purchase orders and shipping notes) with a standardized digital format that computer systems (WMS and ERP) can read without human intervention.
How EDI Powers the WMS
In a modern warehouse, EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) works as the "universal language". When a customer places an order in their own system, EDI sends that information directly to your WMS.
Automatic Receiving
The WMS receives the ASN (Advanced Shipping Notice) file via EDI and already knows exactly which pallets are on the truck before it arrives.
Error Elimination
Manual data entry errors on barcodes or quantities are eliminated.
Processing Speed
The information flow is instantaneous, enabling much shorter order cycles.
