    Buffer

    What is a Buffer?

A Buffer, often referred to as a 'surge area' or 'temporary storage', is a strategic stock reserve or a temporary physical storage area designed to absorb unforeseen variations in the supply chain. It acts as a 'shock absorber' that protects subsequent stages (such as production or shipping) against supplier delays or sudden spikes in customer demand.

Types of Buffer in the Warehouse

    Safety Stock (Inventory Buffer)

Extra quantity of product kept to prevent stockouts during the supplier's replenishment lead time.

    Receiving Buffer Area

Space where goods await verification and system entry without blocking docks.

    Staging Area (Shipping Buffer)

Zone where prepared orders wait for the carrier's truck to arrive.

    Intelligent Management via WMS

Having too much stock in the buffer ties up capital; having too little puts operations at risk. The WMS helps find the balance through:

    Automatic Replenishment Calculation

The system monitors consumption in real-time and issues transfer orders from reserve stock (buffer) to the picking front as soon as levels reach a critical point.

    Dynamic Space Management

The WMS optimizes the location of buffer areas to ensure continuous material flow without creating bottlenecks in main aisles.

    Inventory Visibility

Ensures that stock 'hidden' in the buffer is counted in the total availability for sale, preventing lost business opportunities.
