    SSCC (Serial Shipping Container Code)

    Logistics Glossary

The SSCC (Serial Shipping Container Code) is an international GS1 standard used to uniquely and individually identify each logistics unit (typically a pallet or container). Unlike the SKU, which identifies the product type, the SSCC acts as a unique "license plate" for that specific volume during its transport and storage.

Why is it vital for traceability?

Without the SSCC, tracking a pallet in a large warehouse is nearly impossible. In a WMS, this code enables:

    Instant identification

With a single barcode scan, the system knows everything inside that pallet (lots, expiry dates, various SKUs).

    Movement control

Every time the pallet changes shelf or enters a truck, the record is automatic.

    Interoperability

SSCC is the standard required by major retailers (like Walmart, Carrefour, or Tesco) for receiving goods via EDI.

    SSCC code structure

The SSCC consists of 18 digits following a standardized structure:

    1
    Extension digit (1 digit)
    2
    GS1 Company Prefix (7-10 digits)
    3
    Serial reference number (6-9 digits)
    4
    Check digit (1 digit)

    Competitive advantage

A WMS that automatically generates and manages SSCC labels eliminates the need for manual labeling and shipping errors, ensuring the customer receives exactly what was invoiced.
