Comprehensive Definition
Cross-Docking is a logistics strategy that aims for the direct transfer of goods from receiving to shipping, with minimal intermediate storage or handling time. In practice, the product "crosses" the warehouse without being placed on storage shelves.
Types of Cross-Docking
Pre-Distributed
The supplier already labels units for their final destinations. The warehouse simply sorts and redirects.
Consolidated (Opportunistic)
The WMS identifies that an item that just arrived is needed for a pending order (backorder) and directs it immediately to the packing zone.
Impact on Efficiency
This technique is vital for e-commerce operations and perishable products. By eliminating the put-away (storage) and subsequent picking phases, the company drastically reduces operational costs and delivery Lead Time.
