Comprehensive Definition
Batch Picking is an order preparation methodology that involves the simultaneous collection of items for multiple orders in a single trip through the warehouse. Instead of an operator processing one order at a time (which would require multiple trips to the same aisle), they collect, for example, all units of a specific SKU needed for 10 different orders at once.
How Batch Logic Works
Consolidation
The WMS analyzes pending orders and identifies common items or nearby locations.
Picking Mission
The operator receives an instruction on the RF terminal to collect, for example, 20 units of a product.
Distribution (Sort-while-pick)
As they collect, the operator deposits the quantities into the respective containers or boxes (each representing a different order) that they carry on a multi-position cart.
Advantages and ROI
Drastic Reduction in Travel
This is the main benefit. It minimizes walking time, which is the most expensive component of picking.
Ideal for E-commerce
Very effective when there are many orders with few items (1 to 3 lines per order).
Labor Optimization
Allows a single operator to do the work that, in a discrete system, would require multiple employees.
The Role of WMS
Without a WMS, Batch Picking is prone to errors (swapping items between orders). The software ensures process integrity by requiring the scanning of each item's barcode and the destination box, validating preparation in real-time.
