    ABC Analysis

    Comprehensive Definition

ABC Analysis or ABC Curve is an inventory classification method inspired by the Pareto Principle, which states that 80% of consumption value comes from only 20% of items. In the logistics context, this technique allows categorizing stock into three distinct groups (A, B, and C), prioritizing management resources where they generate the greatest financial and operational impact.

    ABC Classification Categories

    Class A

Represents about 20% of items but accounts for approximately 80% of movement value or revenue. They are the "heart" of the operation and require rigorous stock control.

    Class B

Items of intermediate importance (approx. 30% of items and 15% of value). Require moderate control.

    Class C

The vast majority of items (approx. 50%), but with the lowest impact value (about 5%). The focus here is on simplifying processes to reduce maintenance costs.

The Role of WMS in ABC Slotting

An advanced WMS software uses ABC Analysis to automate Slotting (strategic positioning). The system suggests that Class A items be stored in "Golden Zone" locations (near shipping docks and at operator waist level), minimizing travel and drastically accelerating picking time.
